Finding meaning in your work
Viktor Frankl outlines three ways of deriving meaning in your life:
Creative: Meaning derived from actively contributing to the world through work, art, or other forms of creation.
Experiential: Meaning through experiencing positive moments, connecting with others, and appreciating beauty in life.
Attitudinal: Meaning derived from one's chosen attitude towards difficult situations, especially when facing suffering that cannot be changed.
Work at times can be “suffering that cannot be changed”. Yet, you can still infuse it with meaning by doing your job earnestly and taking it seriously. That’s creating meaning through the attitude you have toward your work.
That's what the toilet cleaner does in Perfect Days (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27503384/).
And DHH on this, too: I'm always amazed by the pride and duty it appears most Japanese workers put into the most mundane jobs. I forget where I read this, but it's the difference between being a happy zoo keeper who think of their job as "tending to the welfare of the elephants" rather than just "shoveling shit all day". Also, taking whatever you do very seriously will make it more likely that you'll become really good at it. The better you are at what you do, the more leverage you have to trade your skills for more interesting work, or for more freedom/autonomy.
